Group Lessons

Wheaton Ice Arena offers group lessons for skaters age 3 and up, at every level of ability. Whether it’s your first time on the ice, or you’re a routine visitor to the rink there’s a skating course for you at Wheaton Ice Arena!

Our classes range from basic offerings, focusing on the foundation of progressive skills to variations of hockey and figure skating abilities. Learn how to skate in a fun, safe environment with professional skating coaches to help you achieve your ice-skating goals. You can find a description of each class, along with it’s Activity number to register, at the bottom of this page.

Group Lesson Fees

30-minute group lessons start at $120 per series (six 30-minute lessons)
45-minute group lessons start at $180 per series (six 45-minute lessons)
Lesson fee includes skate rental for each lesson and a practice card good for public skating sessions to practice. Fees cannot be prorated. There are no make-ups for missed lessons
Classes with less than 3 participants will either be refunded or combined with another class. No transfers can be made after the second class has met.

Preschool Ice Skating Classes (ages 3 to 5 years old)

These leveled classes are designed for beginner skaters ages 3 to 5 years old. All class fees include skate rental plus a practice card good for public skate session admissions to practice skills learned in class.

Summer Preschool Ice Skating Classes

Parent & Tot Ice Skating Registration

Ages: 3 to 5 years old

Equipment Required: Helmet and Gloves. Bike helmets are acceptable.

Skating is fun, and great exercise for you and your child! This class teaches children beginning skating skills with Mom or Dad right there to help them feel safe. Parents will need basic skating skills in order to skate with their child. Preschool skaters will learn how to sit and stand up on skates (off and on the ice); march in place; march forward; glide on two feet; and dip in place. Fee covers registration for child and parent, skate rental for child and parent, and practice time. Register only the child for the course. Fee is $120 and includes six 30-minute lessons, skate rental, and a practice card for public session admission to practice.

Ages: 3 to 6 years old

Equipment Strongly Suggested: knee pads, elbow pads, and shin guards.

Prerequisite: Must have already passed Preschool 1. Can’t get your child to put that stick down? Let us put a hockey stick in their hands instead. This class is geared for the high-energy toddler who likes to move, bang, and bash. We will teach them to skate and how to shoot a hockey puck! Skaters will follow the Preschool 2 curriculum. Fee is $120 and includes six 30-minute lessons, skate rental, and a practice card for public session admission to practice.

Kinder Sticks Registration

Ages: 4 to 6 years old

Prerequisite: Must have passed Preschool 2 and Tots with Sticks. Kinder Sticks expands on the beginning skating skills taught through Tots with Sticks program and aims to prepare young skater for Hockey 1. Skaters will follow the Preschool 3 and 4 curriculums. Engaging games and colorful obstacle courses strengthen forward and backward skating, turns, and stopping skills. Students listen, learn, and practice their ice skating skills in an encouraging, joyful space. Fee is $120 and includes six 30-minute lessons, skate rental, and a practice card for public session admission to practice.

Intro to Speedskating

Intro to Speedskating Registration

Ages: 6 and older

Prerequisite: Must have passed Ice skating level 2. This 45-minute class is an introduction to short track speed skating and is designed to help skaters build on basic skating skills while learning speed skating fundamentals such as balance, knee bend, body position, and alignment in a supportive and structured environment. The class includes 30 minutes of on-ice instruction from 1:15–1:45 p.m. and concludes with 15 minutes of dryland training from 2:00–2:15 p.m. Skaters may participate in hockey skates, figure skates, or speed skates; speed skates are not available to borrow on site. Helmets are required for all participants; bike helmets are acceptable.

Skaters will learn forward inside open mohawk, backward outside edge to forward outside edge transition on a circle, ballet jump, backward crossovers to backward outside edge glides, combination step sequences, one-foot upright spin, mazurka, and waltz jump. Fee is $120 and includes skate rental and a practice card good for public skating.

Beginner Spins Registration

Ages: 6 and up

Prerequisite: Youth 6 level. The beginning spin class is a 30-minute class designed for skaters to focus on establishing their spin technique. Proper positioning, centering, speed, and skating skills are a necessity to achieving all phases of a well-rounded spin. Skaters will focus on these phases while learning the upright spin, beginning sit spin, change foot spin, and exercises to strengthen and enhance future spin positions such as the camel and layback spin. Fee is $120 and includes skate rental plus a practice card good for admission to nine public skate sessions to practice skills learned in class. Helmet and gloves are strongly recommended. Groups will be divided by age and skill level.

Tips for your first class

Wear one pair of thin socks.
Helmets and gloves are highly recommended. Helmets are required for all Preschool classes, Youth Ice Skating 1, Tweens and Teens Ice Skating 1, and Adult Ice Skating 1 classes. Bike helmets are fine. Helmets are recommended for all other levels.
Arrive at the rink 15 minutes early for your lesson, and early for subsequent classes so you have plenty of time to get skates and gear on before class starts.
Ask for skates that are size smaller than your shoe size.
