Black Hill Discovery Center

The Discovery Center hosts an information desk, restrooms, exhibits, children’s corner, and naturalist staff offices. It is a perfect place to get more information about the park, attend a nature program, or take a break in between hiking or paddling.

The Discovery Center has an ADA accessible wrap around deck overlooking the lake. Stop by for birding, photography, or to enjoy a glorious sunset.

Outside the center are natural play spaces perfect for fun exploration, native plant gardens maintained by wonderful volunteers, a pond, meadow, and a one-of-a-kind Earth Bench.

NEW TEMPORARY EXHIBIT COMING SOON!

Black Hill Discovery Center is hosting the art exhibitFor the Love of Birds: Climate and a Changing Landscape sponsored by the Friends of Black Hill Nature Programs. This art exhibit tells the story of how birds will be affected by climate change, with different habitats illustrated through canvas photography and supported by interpretive signage and glass birds. Exhibit runs Saturday, January 10 through Sunday, March 1. Drop in during Discovery Center Hours, Friday – Sunday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Exhibit is free.


Black Hill Discovery Center is a Maryland Green Center as certified by the Maryland Association of Environmental and Outdoor Educators.

As a Green Center, we provide support to schools in Montgomery and Frederick Counties as they work to become Maryland Green Schools.  Black Hill Discovery Center provides curriculum-based field trips, sustainable practices guidance, Green School application support, professional development for educators and more!

campfire ring rentals

Campfire Ring Permits are available 7 days a week, for 3 hours, $150 permit fee. Firewood and fire starter materials are included.
