The mission of AHFP is to preserve and interpret agricultural practices and lifestyles spanning the early 1700s through the late 1960s.

Our vision is to cultivate a greater understanding and appreciation for our diverse agricultural heritage by authentically sharing stories and illustrating how agriculture effortlessly incorporates various disciplines. Through careful preservation, we aim to accurately reflect our history, aspiring to be the foremost educational resource for learners of all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs.

At the Agricultural History Farm Park, we aim to bring to life Montgomery County’s rich agricultural history and farming practices from the 18th to the 20th centuries. We provide engaging experiences for Montgomery County residents, seekers, and enthusiasts of history and science. By bridging the past and present to foster a deep connection to our agricultural heritage and the environment. This scenic 455-acre park features rolling hills, open fields, an apple orchard, and a variety of farm animals. Get a unique perspective on the county’s rich farming heritage while visiting barns, historic buildings, a modern farming activity center, and other facilities at the park. The mission of AHFP is to preserve and interpret agricultural practices and lifestyles spanning the early 1700s through the 1960s.

We currently are not offering group tours but look forward to restarting them Summer 2025.

Exciting Opportunity for Students – Register Now!

On Friday, May 9, 2025, from 11 AM to 3 PM, join us for an engaging and educational event designed to connect students with the world of agriculture, environmental stewardship, and exciting career opportunities. With over 20 interactive educational booths, live demonstrations, and hands-on activities, this event promises a fun-filled, informative experience for everyone.

Students will have the chance to dive into the world of both historic and modern agricultural practices, gain a deeper understanding of the environmental impact of the agriculture industry, and discover potential career paths in the field.

Participating organizations include the Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation’s Ag Showcase, the King Barn Dairy MOOseum, the Sankofa Mobile Museum, the Nature on Wheels Mobile Science Center, and many more. Students can explore seed identification, learn about indigenous tribes, try candle dipping, and engage in traditional crafts. There will be exciting games, activities, and hayrides, along with live demonstrations throughout the day, making the learning process both fun and memorable.

This event features a diverse range of exhibitors, including the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Department of Environmental Protection, Montgomery Parks, dozens of local farms, businesses, and environmental experts. Students will also get to connect with representatives from organizations such as Brookside Nature Center, the Office of Agriculture, Maryland 4 – H, the Natural Resources Police and more.

Homeschool Tailgate Day: A Fun and Educational Event for All! – Montgomery Parks

Food for purchase will be available, but we encourage all attendees to bring water bottles and consider packing a picnic lunch to make a whole day of the event – explore the farm’s historic outbuildings, bank barn, farm animals, scenic trails, and beautiful places to enjoy the landscape.

The Activity Center

To reach the Activity Center, follow the paved entrance road all the way to the parking lots at the end, which are available for public use.

The Activity Center is home to the University of Maryland Extension, the Office of Agriculture, the Montgomery County 4-H & Youth Office, USDA Farm Service, Natural Resource Conservation Service, and the Montgomery Soil Conservation District. In addition to these offices, the center features a spacious recreational area that hosts a variety of educational and entertainment events. Public restrooms and drinking water are available during regular operating hours. The UMDE Master Gardeners – Demonstration Garden and the National Capital Dahlia Society Garden are accessible from here.

Volunteer

The AHFP is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to assist with gardening, living history demonstrations, and interpretive programs. Whether you have a love for plants or a passion for history, there’s a place for you to get involved! Volunteers help create engaging, hands-on experiences that bring history and nature to life for visitors of all ages. Friends of the Agricultural History Farm Park

The Friends play a vital role in advancing the mission of the AHFP by supporting park staff and enhancing the park system through meaningful volunteer partnerships. In recent years, they have contributed over 88,000 hours of service annually. Montgomery Parks is incredibly grateful for this generous community support, which helps preserve and enrich the farm park for all to enjoy. The Friends also offer engaging programs and historical farm life demonstrations that highlight agriculture and local heritage.

Photography Permits

The Agricultural History Farm Park offers a stunning backdrop for photography! A paid photo permit is required for posed photography sessions, available seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
