From greeting the public to caring for the animal ambassadors, Meadowside works with volunteers in almost all areas of our operations. The contributions of each volunteer’s time, energy, and talents are an invaluable asset to the team.
Volunteers can contribute on a long-term or short-term basis. Positions are available throughout the year and are posted to the Montgomery Parks Volunteer webpage.
Long-term Opportunities
These positions fulfill a minimum requirement throughout a defined period of time, whether that is 3 months, 6 months, or a year. They often require training which can be delivered online and in person. Long-term volunteer positions open up throughout the year. Please visit the Montgomery Parks Volunteer page for a list of open positions.
Short-term Opportunities
These positions assist in projects, large events, or other short-term needs. These opportunities usually do not require training to participate. Please see the Montgomery Parks Volunteer website for position postings.
Special Opportunities
Eagle Scouts
Meadowside maintains a list of needed construction projects that are appropriate for Eagle Scouts. When available, we will post these to the Montgomery Parks Volunteer page for Scouts.
MCPS Student Service-Learning Hours
A few positions at Meadowside qualify for Student Service Learning (SSL) hours. As an approved SSL host agency, all student opportunities must be preapproved by Montgomery County Public Schools and the Montgomery County Volunteer Center. Only the preapproved options will provide you with SSL hours. Examples may include:
- Volunteer Camp Counselors
- Weed Warrior Workdays
- Special Events
Please see the Montgomery Parks Volunteer Services Office page for current Student Service-Learning opportunities and frequently asked questions.
MCPS High School Internship Program
MCPS students may pursue a volunteer-based internship at Meadowside Nature Center. Internships are offered based on staff availability to support the intern and the schedule of the student. All student opportunities must be preapproved by the Meadowside Volunteer Coordinator and the School Internship Coordinator. High school interns may work in a combination of areas, including care of reptiles, amphibians, insects, and supporting education activities.
Please see the Montgomery County Public Schools Career Readiness page for more information on high school internships.
Higher Education Internships & Capstone Projects
Students in trade schools, community colleges, and universities may coordinate a volunteer-based internship or a capstone project with Meadowside Nature Center. We prefer to host students as a volunteer-based intern who have an internship or capstone requirement in their degree program. Such opportunities are considered on a case-by-case basis. Please email the Volunteer Coordinator to explore such a collaboration. Paid internships with Montgomery Parks are available seasonally; click here to find paid opportunities.
