Celebrate February as Black History Month at Montgomery Parks

WHEATON, Md.— Montgomery Parks invites the community to honor this important month with a series of events designed to educate, engage, and reflect.   

Black History Month events include: 

Free books at Josiah Henson Museum and Park*: Throughout the month, booklets on African American history and culture will be available free at the museum. The titles are courtesy of Henson descendant, Pamela Springs, executive director of PRIDE Museum in Dublin, California. *One booklet per person while supplies last. 

History Book Club (virtual) | Wednesday, Feb. 11 | 6:30 – 8 p.m.  
Josiah Henson Museum and Park (virtual) 
Commemorate 250 years of American independence by delving into diverse narratives and experiences that shaped this country. Through fiction and nonfiction, we’ll examine our shared past and its impact on today. Join us for a discussion of “All That She Carried” by Dr. Tiya Miles. Free.  

Black History Month Family Day | Saturday, Feb. 14 | 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. 
Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park 
Children and families are welcome to drop-in to Black History Month Family Day. Hands-on activities will include playing traditional African music, sharing what freedom means to you, testing your knowledge of historical African American figures, and more! There will also be story times at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The event takes place inside the Woodlawn Manor House. No advanced reservation required. Free

History Hour: Jubilee Voices Concert | Sunday, Feb. 15 | 3 – 4 p.m. 
Josiah Henson Museum and Park 
Join us in celebrating Black History Month and the 250th anniversary of America with a concert by the renowned Jubilee Voices, part of the Washington Revels. Founded in 2010, the ensemble performs throughout the D.C. area, preserving African American history and traditions through unique programs that infuse history with a cappella music, drama, spoken word, and dance. Recommended for all ages. Tickets available online and limited onsite. Arrive early and take a self-guided tour of the museum; doors open at 10 a.m. An accessible Ride-On shuttle will be provided from Wall Local Park. Limited accessible parking onsite. The concert costs $15 per person

Black History Month Family Day: Life at Dawn | Saturday, Feb. 28 | 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. 
Josiah Henson Museum and Park 
Reverend Josiah Henson worked tirelessly throughout his life to advocate for freedom and education. Come visit the Josiah Henson Museum and Park for educational, hands-on activities that demonstrate what a child’s life was like at Dawn, the settlement he created after taking his family to Canada via the Underground Railroad. The family-friendly event is appropriate for all ages. Tickets are available onsite. Admission: $6-children and seniors, $7-adults

Wood and Wine at Oakley Cabin | Saturday, Feb. 28 | 4- 7 p.m.  
Oakley Cabin African American Museum and Park 
Honor the history of the cabin’s Reconstruction-era African American residents, while crafting and sipping by the fire. Celebrated local artist AnnA Fogg will guide you through creating a stunning, one-of-a-kind wooden art piece while you enjoy a glass of aromatic mulled wine and a rustic spread of smoked meats, cheeses, roasted vegetables, and bread around the fire. Includes an exclusive, handmade artisan mug. $50. (21+)
