Gunner’s Lake Local Park- Park Renovation

A concept plan for the renovation of Gunner's Lake Local Park which includes a playground, picnic shelter, paved loop trail, relocated soccer field, a community connection trail, park entry feature, relocated accessible parking, fitness area, accessible field seating and a stairway to existing road crossing.

Project Description

This project will renovate Gunner’s Lake Local Park, located at the intersection of Great Seneca Highway and Wisteria Drive in Germantown. The park contains a parking lot, a picnic shelter, a playground, and two soccer fields. The project intends to renovate the existing park to improve the playground, picnic area, accessibility, and community connections.

Background

Gunner’s Lake Local Park is approximately 9 acres and was acquired by The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) in 1982 and is surrounded by high-density residential and commercial retail development. The park borders S. Christa McAuliffe Elementary School to the south and is accessed off Great Seneca Highway. The picnic shelter and two soccer fields are permitted through Montgomery Parks. The playground has not been updated since 1982 and the existing parking and paths do not meet current ADA accessibility guidelines.

Status/Project Update

A community meeting was held Wednesday, January 10, 2024, from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm via Zoom. Montgomery Parks staff introduced the park renovation project and possible improvements.
