Field Trips
The Josiah Henson Museum & Park offers engaging and educational field trips designed to immerse students and scouts in the history of Josiah Henson and the realities of slavery in Montgomery County, Maryland during the 19th century.
Field trips to the Josiah Henson Museum & Park cost $5 per student and have a maximum of 60 students. Trips can be scheduled Tuesdays – Sundays, from 9:30 am until 4:00 pm. To book a field trip, email Henson Programs

Josiah’s Story
For Grades 4-6
This 90-minute field trip uses primary sources, archaeological objects, and hands-on activities to teach students about Josiah Henson’s remarkable life and the realities of slavery in Montgomery County, Maryland in the 19th century.
The Life of Josiah Henson:
For Grades 5-10
This 90-minute field trip uses the museum and grounds to tell the story of Josiah Henson through audio-visual presentations, a tour of the historic house and grounds, and a student-led debate on facts and myths of American slavery.
HISTORY-IN-THE-BOX Learning Kit Program
“Searching for Josiah Henson,” is an outreach program for students in grades 4th—8th. This presentation provides interactive lessons designed to fit within a single class period. It focuses on Rev. Henson’s life, enslavement in Maryland, and the Underground Railroad experience. The presentation is also accompanied by a three-week rental of the History-In-A-Box learning kit, which is included in the program fee.
