Montgomery Parks to mark Juneteenth with family events, museum programs and Heritage Festival

Events begin June 13 with Family Day at Josiah Henson Museum and Park

Wheaton, Md. – Montgomery Parks will mark Juneteenth with special events beginning Saturday, June 13, at historic sites across Montgomery County. Juneteenth is a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865. 

Juneteenth Activities: 

Family Day: Henson Birthday Celebration 
Saturday, June 13, 2026, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 
Josiah Henson Museum and Park, 11410 Old Georgetown Road, North Bethesda 
This free event kicks off Juneteenth week with family-friendly activities and hands-on experiences honoring the life and legacy of Reverend Josiah Henson. Reverend Henson was enslaved in Montgomery County, escaped to freedom, and later helped others along the Underground Railroad. International storyteller The Honorable Baba-C will perform at 2 p.m. Parking is available at Wall Local Park, 5900 Executive Blvd., North Bethesda

Juneteenth at Josiah Henson Museum and Park 
Friday, June 19, 2026, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 
11410 Old Georgetown Road, North Bethesda 
Visitors can explore exhibits and hands-on activities at this historic site. Admission is $7 for adults and $6 for seniors and children. Parking is available at Wall Local Park, 5900 Executive Blvd., with an accessible walking path to the museum. 

Juneteenth at Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park 
Friday, June 19, 2026, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 
16501 Norwood Road, Sandy Spring 
Guests can tour the Woodlawn Museum and learn about Montgomery County history, Black communities, and the Underground Railroad. Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and children, and free for children ages 5 and under. The Underground Railroad Experience Trail is open sunrise to sunset for self-guided exploration. 

Oakley Cabin African American Museum and Park Augmented Reality Experience 
Available year-round from sunup to dusk 
3610 Brookeville Road, Olney 
Oakley Cabin tells the story of life after emancipation, when the site became the center of a community of free Black families. Visitors can scan QR codes with a mobile device to access audio narratives in seven languages, virtual renderings, and interactive three-dimensional models that bring the site’s history to life. 

Annual Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival 
Friday, June 19, 2026, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
Children’s Carnival at Cabin John Regional Park, 7400 Tuckerman Lane, Bethesda 
Montgomery Parks is a co-sponsor of this annual celebration, which features performances, games, rides, a petting zoo, food vendors, and family-friendly activities. The Children’s Carnival is followed by a 6 p.m. dinner and a baseball game at Shirley Povich Field, with fireworks after the game.
