Join us at several of Montgomery Parks’ museums who are hosting free “read-ins” during the national Banned Book Week, October 5 – 11. These events will feature volunteer guest readers sharing excerpts from books that have been banned or challenged, with a focus on historical fiction.
Our event partner, Story Tapestries, will present a special program featuring poet and artist, Baba Bomani at Oakley Cabin African American Museum and Park on Saturday, October 11, between 1:30 – 3:30 pm. Baba Bomani will share his presentation of the profound writings by Frederick Douglass.

Banned Books Week launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of book challenges in libraries, schools, and bookstores. Learn more about Banned Books Week at the American Library Association’s website https://www.ala.org/bbooks/banned.
Step inside Oakley Cabin, a living history museum, and learn about the African American roadside community that lived and worked on this historic site from emancipation well into the 20th century. Their culture and traditions heavily influenced those of surrounding communities, and their story is deeply woven into Montgomery County’s rich history.
Oakley Cabin African American Museum and Park is open the 2nd & 4th Saturdays, from 12pm – 4 pm, April thru October.
