This program has been canceled and Oakley Cabin will be closed. The Oakley Cabin staff will be on site at Josiah Henson Museum and Park for the Family Day: Henson Birthday Celebration festivities where the Oakley Cabin Freedom Quilt will be presented. The Oakley Cabin Freedom Quilt is a vibrant community tribute to the lives of African Americans who lived at Oakley Cabin before and after emancipation. Designed by Kyna Clemons, textile artist and founder of Gyame Quilt Studio, the freedom quilt incorporates squares and artwork created by Oakley Cabin visitors during quilting workshops held at the Oakley Cabin.
Step inside Oakley Cabin, a living history museum, and learn about the African American roadside community that lived and worked on this historic site from emancipation well into the 20th century. Their culture and traditions heavily influenced those of surrounding communities, and their story is deeply woven into Montgomery County’s rich history.
Oakley Cabin African American Museum and Park is open the 2nd & 4th Saturdays, from 12pm – 4 pm, April thru October.
