Montgomery Parks opens historic sites for Montgomery County Heritage Days

Wheaton, Md. Montgomery Parks historic sites will come alive with music, demonstrations, and hands-on activities June 27-28. Montgomery County Heritage Days is an annual countywide celebration of local history and culture, with free, family-friendly events and interactive experiences for all ages.

Montgomery Parks Heritage Days events

Saturday, June 27

Woodlawn Museum at Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
16501 Norwood Road, Sandy Spring
Explore exhibits in the restored 1832 stone barn highlighting local agricultural, Quaker and African American history.

Oakley Cabin African American Museum & Park
Noon to 4 p.m.
3610 Brookeville Road, Olney
Tour the restored 19th-century log cabin, home to African American tenant families in the late 1800s. Enjoy live blues music by Jay Summerour and Eric Selby, historical interpretation by Sheila Arnold, storytelling and historic games. Visitors can also take a self-guided augmented reality tour daily from sunrise to sunset by scanning QR codes onsite with a mobile device to access audio narratives, virtual renderings and interactive 3D models that bring the site’s history to life. Parking is available at 19801 Georgia Avenue, Brookeville. Free shuttle service provided throughout the day.

Sunday, June 28

Josiah Henson Museum & Park
Noon to 4 p.m.
11410 Old Georgetown Road, North Bethesda
Tour the museum and learn about the extraordinary life of abolitionist Rev. Josiah Henson, who was formerly enslaved on the Riley plantation in Rockville. His autobiography inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” Parking is available across the street at Wall Local Park/Kennedy-Shriver Aquatic Center, 5900 Executive Boulevard. The parking lot is open during construction. Visitors can follow the paved trail from the parking lot to the museum entrance.

Thomas Harper Cabin at Brookside Nature Center 
1 to 4 p.m.
1400 Glenallan Avenue, Wheaton
Explore a restored post-Civil War log cabin from the African American community of Jonesville. Because the Thomas Harper Cabin is open to the public only a few times each year, Heritage Days offers a special opportunity to step inside, learn about the Harper family through hands-on activities and tours, and enjoy live blues music featuring Jay Summerour and Eric Selby.

All Montgomery Parks Heritage Days activities will be held rain or shine.
