Sligo-Bennington Neighborhood Park – Playground Renovation

Concept plan for the playground renovation at Sligo-Bennington Neighborhood Park showing the proposed location of the playground and nature play area.

Project Overview

Sligo-Bennington Neighborhood Park, a 6.3-acre park in Silver Spring within the Sligo Creek stream valley, was acquired by M-NCPPC in 1932. The park features a playground, multiuse field, two tennis courts, a picnic area, and walking and biking trails. The existing playground, dating back to the 1990s, is heavily used and in need of replacement. This project will renovate the playground and introduce a nature play area to enhance recreational opportunities for the surrounding neighborhoods.

Status/Project Update

Based on the community meeting held in April 2025 and the feedback received on the Open Town Hall Survey, two alternative playground concepts have been developed.  In each design, a mix of playground equipment has been included for ages 2-5 and 5-12 that provide a diverse range of play opportunities. The proposed nature play area includes a boulder walk between clusters of new trees. Picnic tables are placed beneath the shade of existing mature trees for seating and gathering.

Please provide your thoughts on the two alternative concepts and the different equipment that is proposed.

Based on the community feedback that is received, Parks staff will develop a final concept and move forward with detailed design. Due to funding limitations, construction is not expected before the fall of 2027.
