Potomac Horse Center – Building Demolitions and Trail Improvements Project

A concept map of trail improvements at Potomac Horse Center, showing existing buildings that will be removed, an improved and relocated trailhead for the Muddy Branch Greenway Trail, a new natural surface trail loop within the park, and reforestation and meadow planting areas. The concept also includes two potential road crossings over Quince Orchard Road that could connect to Hickory Grove Local Park during a future phase of the project

Project Overview

The goal of this project is to prepare Potomac Horse Center Special Park for expanded public access by removing buildings that have reached the end of their structural life, relocating the Muddy Branch Greenway Trail trailhead closer to the existing parking lot, and implementing other trail improvements at the park. These actions will support safe, convenient access to the park while laying the groundwork for other potential recreational uses in the future.

Potomac Horse Center Special Park is a 41.6-acre property bounded by Quince Orchard Road to the west and north and Dufief Mill Road to the south. Following the closure of the equestrian center in 2024, the primary public amenity at the site is the Muddy Branch Greenway Trail trailhead. This project focuses on enhancing that amenity and improving visitors’ ability to enjoy the park’s natural setting.

During demolition and trail improvement activities, the trailhead within the park will be temporarily inaccessible; however, the Muddy Branch Greenway Trail and Muddy Branch Stream Valley Park will remain open to trail users. Once completed, these improvements will better position the park to welcome the public for trail access and enjoyment of this beautiful site.
