McKnew Local Park – Phase One – Playground Renovation

Project Description

This project will renovate the existing playground and picnic area for multi-purpose recreation and leisure uses while providing accessibility and stormwater management.

Background

The existing playground was installed in 1998. It will be removed, and a new playground will be installed in its place. Local Park playgrounds are typically 3,500 to 5,000 square feet in size and include playground equipment to meet the needs of children from ages 2-12, and seating for caregivers. Typical types of equipment include swings, play structures, and smaller freestanding pieces.

The new playground will have a shelter, a swing set, two zip lines, equipment for different age groups, and a seating area.

Status/Project Update

The old swings were removed, and replaced with a new Biggo swing on the north side of the playground two years ago. The swing set located on the south side of the playground is also in poor condition and poses a safety risk. Immediate removal is necessary. Unfortunately, it will not be able to withstand use until the scheduled playground renovation expected fall 2024.

The design and permit process is underway. The playground construction is expected to begin in fall 2024.
