Improvements are underway at Wheaton Forest Local Park, located at 1700 University Boulevard West in Wheaton, Maryland. This renovation project aims to revitalize existing amenities and introduce new features that enhance recreation, accessibility, and community connection. Planned upgrades include:

  • Renovate the picnic shelter and restrooms
  • Expand recreational opportunities with new park amenities and site furnishings
  • Enhance the athletic courts for better quality and playability
  • Create inviting spaces for social gatherings
  • Improve accessibility throughout the park
  • Strengthen connections to surrounding streets and neighborhoods
  • Provide stormwater management and landscape improvements.

Background

The 9.3-acre park is located along the west corridor of University Boulevard in the Wheaton-Glenmont area.  The park is surrounded by high-density residential development. The existing amenities include a shelter with restrooms (originally built in the 1960s), basketball court (recently renovated), two tennis courts, two softball fields, a playground (renovated in 2012), and on-site parking.  parking, a picnic shelter, a playground, two softball fields, and two tennis courts.

Status/Project Update

In 2023, the Park Planning and Stewardship team conducted initial community outreach and developed a preliminary program of requirements. Based on public input, a Site Development Plan was created to guide future improvements. This plan has been submitted as part of the preliminary application for funding through the Land and Water Conservation Fund, administered by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
