Dalewood Drive Neighborhood Park

Existing playground located at Dalewood Drive Park

Project Description

This project will renovate Dalewood Drive Neighborhood Park, located between Brightview Street and Veirs Mill Road on Dalewood Drive in Wheaton. The park currently contains a small playground and lawn area. The project intends to renovate the existing park to improve the playground and accessibility and add a picnic seating area.

Background

The approximately 1.5-acre park is surrounded by single-family residential homes and a Verizon switching station to the west. The park is owned by Montgomery County and includes a large storm sewer right-of-way within its borders. The popular existing playground is accessed off Dalewood Drive.

Status/Project Update

The first community meeting took place on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 via Zoom. Montgomery Parks staff introduced the park renovation project, possible improvements, and two preliminary concepts. The community was asked to provide their feedback thought Open Town Hall until March 13, 2024.

Concept 1:

This concept protects the existing Cherry Tree by creating two playgrounds separated by a decked seating area under the existing tree.   A 10’ wide asphalt path connects the park to Connecticut Avenue and provides a small workout area. (Click on the image to enlarge)

Concept 2:

This concept creates a larger playground with a concrete walk wrapping around it with picnic seating under an existing tree.  A large paved, multi-use area south of the playground can be used for group events, basketball hoop, or other hard surface games such as hopscotch or 4-square.  (Click on the image to enlarge)
