Bethesda Eastern Greenway – Future Expanded Park

Map showing three blocks out of the four blocks that compose the future Bethesda Eastern Greenway park. The conceptual drawing is oriented along Tilbury Street. The Plan highlights a linear pedestrian path that connects existing paths located at the Chase Avenue Urban Park. Along the proposed path, new park amenities such as plaza, activity nodes, seating, swing benches and flexible lawn are shown with building facades facing the park.

Bringing Neighbors Together

The future Bethesda Eastern Greenway will serve as an expanded urban green space at the edge of downtown Bethesda. Spanning four blocks along the west side of Tilbury Street, this park will seamlessly link the playgrounds at Cheltenham Drive Urban Park and Chase Avenue Urban Park. Featuring pathways and inviting new park amenities, Bethesda Eastern Greenway will serve as a site for relaxation, recreation, and community connection.

Background

Bethesda Eastern Greenway will be a pedestrian-friendly linear park designed to seamlessly connect two existing small urban parks, as envisioned in the 2017 Bethesda Downtown Plan. This carefully planned place enhances accessibility, walkability, and community connections, serving as a vital link between the dense urban development along Wisconsin Avenue and the single-family neighborhoods east of Tilbury Street.

Project Status

Progress on the Bethesda Eastern Greenway is underway, with key sections provided as the result of development projects at 8001 Wisconsin Avenue and parking lots 25 & 44. The Lot 44 project will also provide improvements at Chase Avenue Urban Park. However, the block containing Cheltenham Urban Park and its future connection to Chase Avenue Urban Park remains a proposed recommendation and is not shown on the concept plan above.
