Sligo Creek Parkway - Montgomery Parks

Portions of Sligo Creek Parkway have been reopened as of January 3, 2025

The portion of Sligo Creek Parkway between Wayne Avenue and Schuyler Road is open following the 2024 closure for construction of the Maryland Transit Administration’s (MTA) Purple Line Light Rail Project. Pavement and shoulders in the vicinity of the intersection will remain in temporary condition for several months as work continues along Wayne Avenue.

The Sligo Creek Trail north of Wayne Avenue remains detoured through the Sligo Cabin / Silver Spring International Middle School parking lot while construction continues. Montgomery Parks is working to obtain permits to rehabilitate the Sligo Creek Trail from Wayne Avenue to the Schuyler Road trail bridge and aims to complete that work in the spring of 2025, which will require temporary closures. Construction on the southern portion of the Wayne Avenue intersection will require the closure of Sligo Creek Parkway south of Wayne Avenue to Piney Branch Road, which is expected in the summer of 2025.

Please use caution in and around all active construction areas and obey detours.

Sligo Creek Parkway extends from University Boulevard to New Hampshire Avenue (MD 650). The 5.6-mile roadway runs parallel to portions of Sligo Creek Trail. Sligo Creek Trail has numerous features and amenities along the 10.2-mile hard surface trail.

Open Parkway Schedule

As part of the Open Parkways initiative, portions of Sligo Creek Parkway are closed to motor vehicles and open to pedestrians and bicyclists, on weekends; hours vary seasonally.

Old Carroll Avenue to Piney Branch Road (1.1 miles) – open to pedestrians Saturday and Sunday.
Forest Glen Road to University Boulevard West (1.5 miles) – open to pedestrians Friday – Sunday.

Spring/Summer Schedule – March 8, 2025

Fridays 9 am to Sundays 6 pm.*

Fall/Winter Schedule – Begins November 1, 2025

Fridays 9 am to Sundays 4 pm.*

*The closures are completed by the times listed above while the re-openings of the parkways begin at the times listed above. The process can take up to thirty minutes as Park Police check the parkways for safety. We appreciate your understanding and patience.
