Montgomery Parks created Royce Hanson Conservation Park at Broad Run through the Legacy Open Space program to protect the Broad Run watershed and its unique geology, rare plants and wildlife, and diverse habitats.
The land is rich in history. Indigenous peoples once traveled here. During the Civil War, Union forces occupied this property, then owned by a Confederate soldier. African Americans, through enslavement and in freedom, shaped local farming practices into the 20th century.
Today, the park conserves and interprets these natural and cultural resources, offers outdoor recreation, and supports crop farming as part of Montgomery County’s Agricultural Reserve.
