Nature, history, and more await at Montgomery Parks in February

WHEATON, Md.—Enjoy the delights of winter at Montgomery Parks. From moonlight owl prowls and maple sugaring to history programs and a winter woodworking gathering. We’re offering unique ways to explore the outdoors, honor history, and more all month long.

Night Hikes: Owl Prowl | Feb. 2 | 5:30–6:30 p.m.
Black Hill Discovery Center, Boyds

Join us for a post-sunset stroll to look and listen for owls. $7 ($6, Friends of Black Hill).

Maple Sugar Walk | Various dates | Various times
Brookside Nature Center, Wheaton

Hike with a naturalist to the maple tree grove and learn how sugar maple sap is collected and transformed into maple syrup. This is an indoor and outdoor program on natural surface trails. $7.

History Book Club | Feb. 11 | 6:30 – 8 p.m.
Josiah Henson Museum and Park Virtual

Commemorate 250 years of American independence by delving into diverse narratives and experiences that shaped this country. This month’s selection is the book “All That She Carried” by Dr. Tiya Miles. Join the Book Club. Free.

President’s Day Special Opening | Feb. 16 | 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Josiah Henson Museum and Park, North Bethesda

The museum opens special hours to commemorate President’s Day. Come visit us to learn more about Underground Railroad conductor and Montgomery County resident, Reverend Josiah Henson, and enjoy multimedia and hands-on activities. Admission: $6 for children and seniors; $7 for adults. Tickets are available on site. (Parking at 5900 Executive Blvd.) 

School’s Out Camp | Feb. 16 | 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
Meadowside Nature Center, Rockville

No school? Spend the day in School’s Out Camp at Meadowside Nature Center. Campers (ages 6 – 10) will play games, go for hikes, craft, and more while making new friends and memories. $65.

Eco-Teen Challenge: A Fishy Adventure: Building a Better Water Filter | Feb. 28 | 10 – 11:30 a.m.
Black Hill Discovery Center, Boyds

Discover how our local watersheds support wildlife and explore how our everyday actions affect these vital ecosystems. Then, dive into a hands-on STEM activity by building your own water filter! Designed for ages 11-13. $8 ($7, Friends of Black Hill).

Wood and Wine at Oakley Cabin | Feb. 28 | 4- 7 p.m.
Oakley Cabin African American Museum and Park

Craft, sip, and savor by the fire. Celebrated local artist Anna Fogg will guide you through creating a stunning, one-of-a-kind wooden art piece while you enjoy a glass of aromatic mulled wine and a rustic spread of smoked meats, cheeses, roasted vegetables, and bread around the fire. Includes an exclusive, handmade artisan mug. $50. (21+)
