Montgomery Parks sponsors Urban Tree Summit to address the health of trees in developed landscapes

WHEATON, Md. – Montgomery Parks and Casey Trees will host the thirteenth annual Urban Tree Summit on September 18, 2024, at the Silver Spring Civic Center. The day-long summit will feature presentations on innovative efforts to preserve trees in urban and suburban settings. In the days after the summit there will be field sessions offering participants a close-up look at tree preservation practices.

The Urban Tree Summit is open to tree care professionals such as arborists, landscapers, engineers, and housing developers. Interested citizens are also encouraged to attend.   

“The Urban Tree Summit is a great opportunity to learn from leaders in the tree preservation profession,” said Colter Burkes, Montgomery Parks urban forester. “Combined with the field sessions, this summit will spark conversation and networking opportunities that benefit our profession, and the trees, years down the road.”

·         Fairfax County’s Tree Canopy:  Examining the Effects of Land Development Regulations on Tree Canopy Conservation 

·         Selection in the City: A Nursery Supply Chain Analysis Explores Domestic Selection of Baltimore’s Trees 

·         Right Tree, Right Trait: Insights on Selecting Trees to Optimize Ecosystem Service Provision in our Cities.

Field session: Langdon Park Forest Patch Tour  
Join the Langdon Park Forest Stewards to see how Assisted Natural Regeneration is being used to promote new tree growth in this urban forest. Lunch will be provided.

Field Session: Prince George’s County Champion Tree Bus Tour  
Travel by van to see some of the largest trees on record in the Upper Marlboro area.  Lunch provided. 

Tuesday, September 24, 2024 
9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. National Museum of African American History and Culture, 1400 Constitution Ave. NW, Washington DC 20560 
Field Session:  A Living Monuments Tour: Management and Care of the Significant Trees of DC’s Monumental Core Meet under the live oak trees in the Reading Grove to learn about the preservation of historic trees on the National Mall. 

Thursday, September 26, 2024 
9:30 a.m.-Noon. Brookside Gardens,1800 Glenallan Avenue, Wheaton, MD 20902 
Field Session: Introduction to Forest Bathing at Brookside Gardens 
Join a certified forest therapy guide for an introduction to Shinrin-yoku, a practice designed to alleviate stress by bathing in the sights and sounds of the natural world. The session will conclude with a tea ceremony.  

Registration is required for all Urban Tree Summit sessions. Identity of participants will be verified upon entry. Continuing Education Units will be awarded by the Internation Society of Arboriculture, American Society of Landscape Architects, MD Licensed Tree Experts and the Society of American Foresters. The exact number of CEUs available for each session is listed on the registration page.
