WHEATON, Md. – Montgomery Parks has reopened the playground at Greenbriar Local Park in Potomac, 20 months after it was destroyed by arson. According to Montgomery County fire investigators, the playground at 12525 Glen Road was intentionally set on fire on May 7, 2024, causing approximately $1 million in damage.
“The fire at Greenbriar Local Park was a devastating blow,” said Miti Figueredo, director of Montgomery Parks. “To restore this important community amenity, we had to reallocate existing capital funds that would have gone to other playground projects and make room in the Parks Department’s very full development program. We are relieved that the work is now complete and we can welcome families back.”
The new playground structure is nearly identical to the one it is replacing. It includes slides, a climbing feature, and multi-level fort to encourage active and imaginative play for children ages 5-12.
Authorities are still seeking suspects in the arson. Anyone with information should contact the Montgomery County Arson Tip Line at 240-777-2263.
