WHEATON, Md. – Calling all builders, crafters and woodworkers. Montgomery Parks will hold its annual Urban Wood Sale on the weekend of November 9-10, 2024.
What:
Urban Wood Sale
When:
Saturday and Sunday, November 9-10, 2024
8:00 a.m.-Noon
Where:
Montgomery Parks’ Green Farm Maintenance Facility
8301 Turkey Thicket Drive
Gaithersburg, MD 20879
Wood available at the sale comes from dead or dying trees that are removed from Montgomery Parks land. Every year, parks arborists cull hundreds of trees as part of Montgomery Parks’ program to promote a healthy tree canopy. Some of the downed trees are suitable for the wood sale, others are recycled into wood chips, mulch, and firewood through the Montgomery Parks Green Waste Recycling Program.
Species of wood available for sale include walnut, cherry, poplar, oak, mulberry, cypress, and ash. The wood is kiln-dried, planed, and air-dried. Slabs are available in different lengths and thicknesses ranging from three-quarters of an inch to three inches.
This year’s sale also features a limited amount of wood from the historic Linden Oak Tree. That estimated 300-year-old tree was taken down last year, due to failing health. Wood from the Linden Oak will be limited to one piece per customer.
“The Urban Wood Sale has grown into an extremely popular program for Montgomery Parks,” said Patrick Harwood, a forester at Montgomery Parks. “Customers line up early and the shopping is first come, first served. This year, we will have food trucks here selling refreshments to keep the shoppers’ energy up.”
The wood in the sale is priced from $5 to $400, depending on the size, quality, and species of wood. Payment is accepted via credit card only. There are no advance sales. The sale will end early if all the wood is purchased before the scheduled end time. All proceeds from the Urban Wood Sale benefit Montgomery Parks Urban Wood Waste Recycling Program and Green Waste Recycling Program.
