Save the trees and the ecosystem
Join Ellen, Weed Warrior Supervisor, for a non-native, invasive plant removal workday in Upper Paint Branch Stream Valley Park in Colesville, MD. We will focus on non-native, invasive vines and shrubs, including roundleaf bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), honeysuckle vine (Lonicera japonica), and multiflora rose (Rosa multiflora). We’ll be working in close proximity to the Good Hope tributary, which has historically been the primary spawning and nursery area for metropolitan Washington’s last remaining self-sustaining brown trout population. This non-native, invasive plant removal event is helping the native trees that volunteers and staff recently planted in this area.
Directions to the site (a map will be emailed to you after you register): From New Hampshire Avenue, turn right on to Good Hope Road and head east. Follow Good Hope Road for 0.5 mile to the reach event site. There is road-side parking on Good Hope Road both before and after the site. In addition, there is a pull-off area within walking distance on Good Hope Road just east of New Hampshire with room for several cars. Click here for a Google map of the location.
Please wear long pants that cover your ankles, long sleeves, and sturdy, closed-toed shoes. Bring gloves, pruners, small folding hand saws and/or loppers if you have them. Gloves and tools are available to borrow if you don’t have your own. No power tools or machetes allowed. Please bring water to drink. Please note: Court Ordered Volunteer Hours can’t be granted through this workday.
This event is capped at 6 people.
This workday is pre-approved for MCPS SSL hours. Volunteers must be 16 years or older to join this event.
