Celebrate Earth Month, Save the trees, and Protect the Reddy Branch Stream Valley
Join Weed Warrior Supervisor Adam for a non-native, invasive plant removal workday in Reddy Branch Stream Valley in Olney. MD. We will focus on non-native, invasive vines, especially the English ivy (Hedera helix) that is climbing on mature oak, maple, and cherry trees. Native Virginia creeper and poison ivy are also present and beneficial, so we will avoid those.
We will meet a little before 9am at the Infants and Toddlers Building Parking Lot immediately to the south of Rosa Parks Middle School on Olney Mill Road. Address for Infants and Toddlers Building is 19190 Olney Mill Road, Olney, MD 20832 (Click here for a map).
Please wear long pants that cover your ankles, long sleeves, and sturdy, closed-toed shoes. Bring gloves, pruners, flathead screwdrivers, small folding hand saws, and/or loppers if you have them. Gloves and tools are available to borrow if you don’t have your own. No power tools or machetes allowed. Please bring water to drink. Please note: Court Ordered Volunteer Hours can’t be granted through this workday.
This event is capped at 20 people.
This workday is pre-approved for MCPS SSL hours. Volunteers under 16 are not permitted to use sharp tools (including pruners or loppers), so if you are under 16, you will help rip plants out of the ground, pry vines off trees with a flathead screwdriver, and make debris piles. Volunteers 14 and under must be accompanied by a pre-registered, responsible adult.
