Weed Warrior Workday at Long Branch SVU2 (Wayne Ave area)- MLK Weekend

volunteer holding a huge root

Save the trees, protect the stream valley ecosystem, and celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend of Service

Join Weed Warrior Supervisor Barbara, for a non-native, invasive plant removal workday at Long Branch Stream Valley by Wayne Ave. We will meet at the footbridge at the end of Wayne Ave. Parking is available on Wayne Ave and Garland Ave (requires walking down the concrete steps to the bridge) or at the lot at University Blvd. and Wayne next to the picnic tables and basketball court.  Additional instructions will be emailed to all pre-registrants.

We will focus on non-native, invasive vines and shrubs including porcelainberry (Ampelopsis glandulosa var. brevipedunculata), English ivy (Hedera helix), and winged euonymus (Euonymus alatus). Native Virginia creeper and poison ivy are also present and beneficial, so we will avoid those.

Dress for the weather. Please wear long pants that cover your ankles, long sleeves, long socks, and sturdy, closed-toed shoes. Bring warm gloves, pruners, flathead screwdrivers, weed wrenches/uprooters, small folding hand saws, and/or loppers if you have them. Gardening gloves and tools are available to borrow if you don’t have your own. No power tools or machetes allowed. Please bring water to drink. Please note: Court Ordered Volunteer Hours can’t be granted through this workday.

This event is capped at 15 people.

This workday is pre-approved for MCPS SSL hours. Volunteers must be 16 years or older to join this event.
