Birdability Week Celebration!

People of all abilities and ages are invited to celebrate Birdability Week with a fun-filled morning of birding activities! Discover the diverse bird species that call Montgomery Parks home and learn about the services provided to make your birding experiences accessible. Activities and resources provided by Montgomery Parks Program Access, Locust Grove Nature Center, Brookside Nature Center, Readability, Nature Forward, Montgomery Bird Club, DC Bird Alliance, EnChroma, and more!

Ongoing activities include:

  • Crafts – Create pinwheels and wind chimes to add to your backyard bird playground!
  • Nature journaling – Use creative prompts to connect with the beauty of birds and their habitat!
  • Native plants – Discover how native plants can transform your garden into a haven for birds!
  • Bird Artifacts – Use your senses to learn about bird specimens like eggs and nests!

Scheduled activities include:

  • Guided Bird ‘Wander” at 10:30AM – Join a group of birding enthusiasts on the trail to spot the many species at the park!
  • Flat birding at 11AM – Learn how to manipulate birding tools and to identify birds with pictures that don’t fly away!
  • Sensory Storytime – Join Readability for a series of stories that engage your eyes, hands, nose, and ears!
    • 10:15AM, Coco the Blue Jay written by Alexandra Wu, Winston Churchill HS
    • 10:45AM, Garry Builds a Nest written by Bonnee Song, Readability student writer
    • 11:30AM, The Rainbow Duckling written by Sophia Campbell (Readability President), Winston Churchill HS

On Site Accessibility:

  • Sensory Retreat Tent
  • Access Ramp from parking lot to trail
  • Seating along the trail for stationary activity
  • Binocular neck straps, harnesses, tripods, and mounting adjustments
  • EnChroma sunglasses
  • ADA Port-a-John

Ray’s Meadow Local Park Parking Lot

Parking is located at 8402 Freyman Dr., Chevy Chase, MD 20815. Available parking lot is shared with Ohr Kodesh Congregation. There is also available street parking on Freyman Drive.
