WaterFest – Social Narrative

This is a social narrative for WaterFest. A social narrative is a visual representation of an event or activity that helps map out what to expect and provide other important information.

What is WaterFest?

WaterFest is a free family-friendly event where people can learn, play, and explore nature and water activities.

How will I get there?

When I arrive, I may park on the street along Maydale Drive or nearby neighborhood streets. If I need help getting from the parking area to the event, there will be an ADA wheelchair accessible shuttle cart available to give rides.

What activities can I do?

There will be self-guided activities and crafts I can try at my own pace. Some activities may include:

  • Making suncatchers
  • Playing with bubbles
  • Exploring sprinklers
  • Going on scavenger hunts
  • Learning about local watershed animals like frogs, eels, beavers, and water bugs
Children and adults standing and sitting in the grass near activity signs.

How can I participate?

Most activities will take place outdoors near the path and grassy areas. I may see many people, hear sounds from bubbles and sprinklers, and move around between activity stations.

I can choose the activities I want to do. It is okay to take breaks if I need them. There may be water activities like sprinklers and bubble stations.

Are there bathrooms?

Yes. Bathrooms and drinking water are available inside Maydale Nature Classroom during the event. There are two single-person bathrooms. The bathrooms use hand-dryers and may be loud.

A single accessible bathroom with accessible handrail.

Can I take a break?

If I feel overwhelmed, I can take a break. There is a Sensory Retreat Tent next to the classroom building where it may be quieter. First, I notice how I feel. Then, I can take a break if I need one.

What should I bring?

Since most activities are outdoors, I may want to bring:

  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • An umbrella or hat
  • A refillable water bottle
  • A towel
  • Extra clothes
  • Lunch or a snack
