Weed Warrior Workday at Northwest Branch Recreational Park- Disc Golf Course- MLK Weekend

Before and after photos of Weed Warrior Volunteers removing large vines from trees

Save the Trees and celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend of Service

Join Weed Warrior Supervisor Ed and Certified Weed Warrior Scott at the new disc golf course at Northwest Branch Recreational Park to remove invasive vines on trees growing within the new course. These vines are actively choking the beautiful trees the new course depends on for aesthetics as well as game play.  Ed and Scott will chat about the constant threat from these vines and other invasive plants, and will explain how to identify them and control them to keep the trees healthy and happy!

We will focus on HUGE round-leaf bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus). Native Virginia creeper and poison ivy are also present and beneficial, so we will avoid those.

Meet at the start of the disc golf course next to the National Capital Trolley Museum (1313 Bonifant Road). Park at the Trolley Museum.

Dress for the weather. Please wear long pants that cover your ankles, tall socks, long sleeves, and sturdy, closed-toed shoes. Bring warm gloves, pruners, folding hand saws, and large loppers if you have them. Gardening-style gloves and tools are available to borrow if you don’t have your own. No power tools or machetes allowed. Please bring water to drink. Please note: Court Ordered Volunteer Hours can’t be granted through this workday.
