
WHEATON, Md.— Summer may be winding down but Montgomery Parks is still turning up the heat with a vibrant lineup of August adventures guaranteed to delight nature lovers, history buffs, photographers, foodies, and social butterflies. From exclusive butterfly photo ops, to traditional mateadas, and a retro comedy classic under the stars, August is bursting with fun experiences you won’t want to miss.

W.A.N.D.E.R Hiking | August 3 | 10 a.m.–12 p.m.
Locust Grove Nature Center
Join W.A.N.D.E.R (Women and Non-Binary individuals Deepening their Environmental Relationships) for a nature skills session covering shelter building, campfire cooking, fire building, foraging, wildlife identification, and more. Beginners welcome. $20 per person.
Night Fishing at Black Hill Regional Park | August 6 | 6–11:59 p.m.
Black Hill Discovery Center
A serene night of fishing under the stars at one of our most scenic spots. Warning: Don’t stay after midnight unless you want to turn into plankton. Free.
Summer Family Day at Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park | August 9 | 11 a.m.–3 p.m.
Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park
Summer Family Day is a drop-in event on the grounds of Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park featuring nature-based hands-on activities. Create a leaf rubbing journal, make a 19th century herbal sachet and more. Free (includes free admission to the Woodlawn Museum).
Foodie Fridays–Cooking: Processing and Retail | August 22 | 6:30–8:30 p.m.
Josiah Henson Museum and Park (Parking is located at Wall Local Park at 5900 Executive Boulevard, North Bethesda)
Explore how the Takoma Park Silver Spring Community Kitchen is helping local small-scale food entrepreneurs overcome barriers and build successful businesses. Enjoy refreshments and great conversation. $15-$20 per person.
Mateada at Meadowside | August 23 | 2–4 p.m.
Meadowside Nature Center
Sip, share, and savor a traditional yerba maté tea picnic inspired by the customs of Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Bring a blanket, games and your own maté kit for this bilingual community gathering. Program is in English and Spanish– all are welcome. $10 per person.
Sunset Summer Movie Night: The Great Outdoors | August 29 | 8–9:30 p.m.
Meadowside Nature Center
Laugh under the stars with this classic 1988 comedy starring John Candy and Dan Ackroyd on Meadowside’s lawn. Tickets include popcorn, candy, and two adult beverages. Sit back, relax, and soak in a late summer evening in the great outdoors. $25 per person.
Social Hikes (20s-30s) | August 30 | 10–11:30 a.m.
Meadowside Nature Center
Forget solo strolls; join fellow outdoor lovers in their 20s and 30s for a friendly, low-key, two-mile hike through scenic natural surface trails. Great views and better company. $7 per person.
