White-tailed deer study at Westmoreland Hills Local Park

Beginning December 2, and continuing through December 20, Montgomery Parks is again partnering with researchers from the University of Maryland as part of a regional study of white-tailed deer, deer-human interaction, and investigation of zoonotic disease transmission in white-tailed deer on an urban/suburban landscape. This research includes the short-term capture of white-tailed deer by way of drop nets. Captured deer will be anaesthetized by trained professionals, biologically sampled, some fitted with GPS collars, and released to allow for study of their movements and interactions across the local landscape. Capture location(s) within Westmoreland Hills Local Park (and/or surrounds of Little Falls Stream Valley Park) will include appropriate signage and questions may be directed to Travis Gallo (tgallo@umd.edu) or you may visit the Study’s webpage for more information about the project.

Westmoreland Hills Local Park features a playground, softball field, multiuse field, basketball court and two tennis courts. On a sunny day, pack a sandwich and enjoy lunch in the picnic area.

A prominent structure in this 10.1-acre park is Battery Bailey, a person made hill constructed during the Civil War to support cannons aimed at protecting the reservoir of water for nearby Washington. M-NCPPC acquired the park in 1951.
