Project Description
Park improvements are planned for Stonehedge Local Park, located at 12121 Old Columbia Pike in White Oak. Proposed improvements include renovation of the existing playground and converting the existing half-size basketball court to a full-size basketball court. A new community garden is proposed for the park as well as a picnic pavilion. The existing fitness area along the northern path will be removed and new fitness equipment will be provided in the park. The renovation will reduce the size of the existing rectangular field to provide a loop path. Other proposed improvements include:
- parking lot improvements
- stormwater management upgrades
- accessibility improvements
- new site furniture including a drinking fountain and bike racks
- portable toilet
The final design is subject to change pending the project budget.
Background
This 4.4-acre park is bounded by Old Columbia Pike on the north, industrial offices, and warehouses on the east and south, and Stonehedge Condominiums on the west. Existing Park amenities include a half-size basketball court, volleyball court, playground, large rectangular field, and a linear path with exercise equipment.
Status/Project Update
A community meeting was held in November 2022, in conjunction with an Open Town Hall survey, to gather preliminary input from the community on amenities they would like to see in the park. The community meeting was followed by a meeting with the Stonehedge Condominiums HOA in January 2023. Two concept alternatives were posted to the project website in the Summer of 2023 along with a survey to collect input on the concepts. Based on the community input and Park staff recommendations, the concept was refined and the detailed design and permitting process begun. In spring 2024, the 60% design plan was made available for public viewing on the project webpage.
