July brings summer fun, history, and culture to Montgomery Parks

WHEATON, Md. – This July, Montgomery Parks is offering plenty of ways to make the most of summer, with many inviting programs and events. Highlights include swing dancing, afternoon tea at a historic manor home, and an evening trek along the Underground Railroad Experience Trail. These activities and more are happening throughout July at Montgomery Parks.

July events include (registration required for all programs unless indicated)

History Book Club | July 8 | 6:30–8 p.m.
Josiah Henson Museum and Park Virtual

Commemorate 250 years of American independence by delving into diverse narratives and experiences that shaped this country. This month the book “The Other Madisons: The Lost History of a President’s Black Family” by Bettye Kearse will be discussed. Join the Book Club. Free.

Tea at Woodlawn | July 11 | 2–4 p.m.
Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park, 16501 Norwood Road, Sandy Spring

Enjoy a traditional yet educational afternoon tea in the parlor of Woodlawn Manor as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday. Enjoy a menu of English tea sandwiches, assorted pastries, and fresh fruit crafted by Clarksville Caterers. Imagine if the Boston Tea Party happened today and create your own protest sign while being immersed in the ambience of an early American home. Part of a quarterly series. $55.

Sensory-Friendly Butterfly Experience | July 12 | 9–10 a.m.
Brookside Gardens, 1800 Glenallan Avenue, Wheaton

Enjoy a gentle morning at The Butterfly Experience withlimited capacity and natural lighting for visitors with sensory sensitivities. Designed to be less overwhelming by reducing the number of visitors, sensory-friendly mornings provide an opportunity for children and their families to visit with the butterflies at their own pace. Experience the magic of butterflies soaring all around and maybe even landing on you! Fidgets will be provided and staff will be on hand to facilitate the experience. All participants must have a ticket. Tickets*: $15.99–Ages 13 and older; $10.99–Ages 3 – 12; Free–Under age 3. (*Ticket prices include a $1.99 service fee.)

Dance Nights in the Barn: Swing Dance! | July 15 | 6– 8 p.m.
Agricultural History Farm Park, 18400 Muncaster Road, Derwood

Join us for an evening of music, movement, and community. Whether you’re brand new to dancing or already love to swing, friendly instruction at the start of the evening will help everyone feel comfortable and ready to dance. Drinks will be provided to keep everyone refreshed throughout the night. Grab a partner or meet someone new and end this Hump Day with a fun-filled night of dancing, great music, and barnyard charm. $15.

Queerness and Mindfulness in Nature | July 17 | 6–7 p.m.
Meadowside Nature Center, 5100 Meadowside Lane, Rockville

Join park naturalists for an immersive mindfulness experience in nature. Explore how our queer identities are an integral part of the natural world and practice mindfulness activities while strolling through Meadowside’s forests. $7.

Guided Twilight Trek | July 25 | 7–8:30 p.m.
Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park, 16501 Norwood Road, Sandy Spring

Learn historical context and techniques enslaved people used to navigate the way North to freedom, including the challenges and opportunities of nighttime travel. Traverse the trail with the help of stars and moonlight while learning which plants were helpful along the journey. Participants are highly encouraged to bring a flashlight and wear light colored or reflective clothing. $10- adults, $8- children/seniors.

Trivia Night in the Barn | July 28 | 6–8 p.m.
Agricultural History Farm Park, 18400 Muncaster Road, Derwood

Put your knowledge to the test with Trivia Night in the Barn! Gather your friends, bring your thinking caps, and enjoy an evening of friendly competition in our rustic setting. Questions will span a variety of fun categories, so there’s something for trivia buffs of all skill levels. Enjoy a selection of adult beverages from our on-site vendor, plus each registration includes one free drink voucher to kick off your night! Prizes await the top contestants, so sharpen those skills and get ready to play! $15.
