Celebrate Earth Month with a Park Cleanup and Weed Warrior event

Join Weed Warrior Supervisors Rochelle and Kathryn for an Earth Month Event in McKenney Hills Neighborhood Park in Silver Spring. We will split into groups; some volunteers will clean up the park/collect trash and some volunteers will conquer non-native, invasive vines and shrubs, including porcelainberry (Ampelopsis glandulosa var. brevipedunculata), wintercreeper (Euonymus fortunei), English ivy (Hedera helix), roundleaf bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) and wineberry (Rubus phoenicolasius).

Plan to meet on the playground.

Please wear long pants that cover your ankles, long sleeves, and sturdy, closed-toed shoes. Bring gloves, pruners, small folding hand saws and/or loppers if you have them. Gloves and tools are available to borrow if you don’t have your own. We will supply trash bags. No power tools or machetes allowed. Please bring water to drink. Please note: Court Ordered Volunteer Hours can’t be granted through this workday.

This event is capped at 25 people.

This workday is pre-approved for MCPS SSL hours. Volunteers under 16 are not permitted to use sharp tools (including pruners or loppers), so if you are under 16, you will help pick up trash, rip plants out of the ground, pry vines off trees with a flathead screwdriver, or make plant debris piles.  Volunteers 14 and under must be accompanied by a pre-registered, responsible adult.

All volunteers must register online: Click here to register for the event
