Save the trees and the stream valley ecosystem
Join Weed Warrior Supervisor Deby for a non-native, invasive plant removal workday at Great Seneca Stream Valley Park Unit 2 in Gaithersburg/ Montgomery Village.
Meet here at the end of Mainsail Drive. Please arrive early; we will walk together for about 10 minutes to the site.
We will work on the Seneca Greenway Trail between Watkins Mill and Brink Road. This is a beautiful and quiet forested section with a healthy population of native forbs. We will target small encroaching invasive barberry before it goes to seed, plus vine honeysuckle and oriental bittersweet. Most of the barberry are small and can be hand-pulled. Due to ticks, we will avoid the big barberry for now and wait for colder weather to pull those.
Please wear long pants that cover your ankles, tall socks, long sleeves, and sturdy, closed-toed shoes. Bring gloves, pruners, small folding hand saws and/or loppers if you have them. Gardening-type gloves and tools are available to borrow if you don’t have your own. No power tools or machetes allowed. Please bring water to drink and bug spray. Please note: Court Ordered Volunteer Hours can’t be granted through this workday.
This event is capped at 10 Volunteers.
This workday is pre-approved for MCPS SSL hours. Volunteers under 16 are not permitted to use sharp tools (including pruners or loppers), so if you are under 16, you will rip plants out of the ground, pry vines off trees with a flathead screwdriver, or make plant debris piles. Volunteers 14 and under must be accompanied by a pre-registered, responsible adult.
