Discover the joy of creating with Hands-On History! In this dynamic program, kids will dive into the skills and crafts of the past as they explore a variety of traditional hands-on activities. From wood carving and leather working to paper making, basket weaving and more, each session offers a new opportunity for young crafters to learn, create and connect with history in a tangible way. Guided by engaging instructors, participants will gain confidence as they work with real tools and materials – experiencing firsthand how everyday items were crafted long before modern technology. Each session brings a fresh project and a chance to explore a different historical technique.
Experience how families lit up their homes before the invention of electricity and lightbulbs! In this interactive history workshop, participants will step back into the 18th and 19th centuries to explore the essential colonial craft of candle making. Young historians will learn about the science and daily chores of early Americans as they practice the patient, traditional art of hand-dipping cotton wicks into warm, colorful wax. By building up layer after layer of wax, everyone will craft their own pair of classic taper candles to take home. It’s a wonderful way to experience history through a sensory, hands-on craft that yields a beautiful, usable keepsake!
This is a drop-off program, but parents are welcome to hang around the Farm Park during the class. Please remember to bring water and dress for the activity – some may get messy!
