About the Agricultural History Farm Park

The Agricultural History Farm Park is situated on 455 acres of land and serves as a historic farm site as well as a modern farming activity center. The Farm Park is a well-preserved example of Montgomery County’s agricultural past, with a history that dates back to the 17th century. The land was originally owned by the Magruder family and passed down many generations until the late19th Century, when it was purchased by the Bussard family. The Bussards built and rebuilt the structures standing today, including our large Bank Barn, the Farmhouse, and all the out-buildings that were essential to farm living. These buildings provide a comprehensive look at the tools and structures that supported farming life in the early 20th century. The Bussard family owned and operated the farm until the 1970s, when they sold the property to Montgomery County to preserve it as a park. Today, the Agricultural History Farm Park serves as a living history museum, offering educational programs and events that highlight the agricultural practices of the past, preserving and showcasing the agricultural legacy that shaped the area’s history.

Along with the Farm Park’s historic farmstead, the park is home to the University of Maryland Extension Master Gardener Program for Montgomery County, the Friends of the Agricultural History Farm Park, the National Capital Dahlia Society demonstration garden, and other educational initiatives. These comprehensive programs ensure that visitors are well-informed about sustainable agriculture and the safe navigation of digital environments, fostering a well-rounded community experience.
