Project Description
This program is funded to renovate existing outdoor courts (tennis, basketball, soccer/futsal, pickleball, and multi-use) each year. The designed life expectancy for each court is 20 years. Courts are identified using reoccurring condition assessments and prioritized using a number of factors to determine the project list. Majority of courts renovated with this program are at or beyond their life cycle.
Background
The Montgomery County Department of Parks has over 300 tennis and over 200 basketball courts within the park system. The courts are regularly inspected and prioritized for renovation based on condition and frequency of use. Each year when the priorities have been established and funding secured, the renovations will take place by means of a construction contract, typically in late spring and summer each year.
These renovations include tennis courts that require major renovation, including new asphalt pavement, chain link fence, color coating, striping, nets and practice boards; and basketball courts that require new asphalt pavement, goals, backboards, color coating and striping.
Often courts will need minor improvements such as power washing, color coating, striping, and new basketball goals and backboards.
Project Status
The Parks’ Capital Improvements Program (CIP) is currently funded to renovate 3-4 tennis and 3-4 basketball courts each year. Some of these minor improvements may be done with park maintenance staff or the renovation may be deferred to a larger project plan scheduled. All project timelines are subject to change to accommodate additional work as needed in the park. This may include coinciding with park refresher projects, access improvement projects, stormwater management projects, etc.
Upcoming Project
Future court renovations will be determined as inspections are completed and the locations are prioritized.
