Project Overview
Montgomery Parks is implementing a stream restoration project along 1,950 linear feet (LF) of North Creek, a tributary to Great Seneca Creek. The project site is located in Great Seneca Stream Valley Unit 2, approximately 0.25 miles northwest of the intersection of Watkins Mill Road and Apple Ridge Road, in Montgomery Village.
The primary goals of the restoration project are to stabilize the stream channel and bed, enhance floodplain connectivity, improve habitat in the stream and the floodplain, and reduce pollutant and sediment loads into Great Seneca Creek originating in this portion of North Creek. The project is intended to meet the requirements of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit issued to Montgomery County by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) and reduce pollutant loads below the Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL).
Portions of the Seneca Greenway Trail, including the pedestrian bridge crossing North Creek, and the parking area off Watkins Mill Road, will be closed during construction.
Status/Project Update
The project is currently in the design and permitting phase. Construction on the project is expected to begin in spring 2027, with an anticipated construction duration of approximately 8 months. Planting will occur in the appropriate season after construction is complete.
