Weed Warrior Workday at Northwest Branch Recreational Park

person cutting vines

Save the Trees

Join Weed Warrior Supervisor Ed and Weed Warriors Scott and Cathy for a non-native, invasive plant removal workday in Northwest Branch Recreational Park. Plan to meet the group in the neighborhood north of Rt 200 and the National Capital Trolley Museum. The exact meeting location will be sent to all pre-registrants. (The inclement weather backup date is Feb 8).

We will focus on non-native, invasive vines and shrubs, especially English ivy (Hedera helix), porcelainberry (Ampelopsis glandulosa var. brevipedunculata), HUGE round-leaf bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), and mulitflora rose (Rosa multiflora). Native Virginia creeper and poison ivy are also present and beneficial, so we will avoid those.

Dress for the weather. Please wear long pants that cover your ankles, long sleeves, and sturdy, closed-toed shoes. Bring gloves, pruners, small folding hand saws and/or loppers if you have them. Gloves and tools are available to borrow if you don’t have your own. No power tools or machetes allowed. Please bring water to drink. Please note: Court Ordered Volunteer Hours can’t be granted through this workday.

This event is capped at 6 volunteers.

This workday is pre-approved for MCPS SSL hours. Volunteers must be 16 years or older to join this event.
