Montgomery Parks will be hosting a series of events to celebrate the 11th annual Latino Conservation Week September 14-22, 2024
Latino Conservation Week was created by the Hispanic Access Foundation in 2014, and it aims to “support the Latino community getting into the outdoors and participating in activities to protect our natural resources.” More than 300 events are expected nationwide with the purpose of inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards in the Latino community.

Latino Conservation Week Events
Escapadas de Tortugas:
Saturday, September 14 | 10:30 am – 12:00 pm | Brookside Nature Center -1400 Glenallan Ave. Wheaton, MD 2090
We’ve lost one of our box turtles! Can you help us find him? We’re sure he’s around here somewhere. He’s left clues to where he’s been. If we follow the clues, we are sure to find him and bring him back safely. Please help! Participate in a fun scavenger hunt on the grounds of Brookside Nature Center. This activity should take under an hour. This is a bilingual program, offered in Spanish and English.
This program is free, but adults and children must register.
Turtle Talk

Visit our turtle ambassadors! Watch our Eastern box turtles stretch their legs and then learn about their behavior, conservation challenges and the physical features that make them such fascinating reptiles.

Kids Tree Climbing:

Montgomery Parks’ arborists will provide safety gear, assistance and encouragement as they provide kids the opportunity to participate in rope-assisted climbing and experience trees from a whole new perspective.

This Event is Full – Meadow Planting
Thursday, September 19 | Meadowside Nature Center – 5100 Meadowside Ln. Rockville, Maryland 20855
Volunteers will plant 300 native plugs (baby plants) in one of the Meadowside Nature Center meadows. Vegetation Management staff have been working on this meadow for the past few years and it’s ready for some native baby plants! The plants will be supplied by our very own Pope Farm nursery!

Children’s Day
Saturday, September 21 | 10 am – 2 pm | Brookside Gardens – 1800 Glenallan Ave. Wheaton, MD, 20902
Explore the science and art of gardening through child-driven art projects and engaging science activities. Participants will rotate through outdoor activity stations designed to educate and entertain, including bilingual (Spanish/English) activity stations with support from EcoLatinos, as well as translated activity materials for the booths provided by the American Public Gardens Association Plant Heroes program. Bring your friends, family, and picnics (only allowed during this special event).
Free event, registration encouraged, but not required.
This Event is Full – Park Clean up – Community Day!
Saturday, September 21 | 10 am – 1 pm | Wheaton Claridge Local Park – 11901 Claridge Rd. Wheaton, MD 20902
Come participate in a clean up or invasive plant removal project, and film screening of local Environmental Latinos, with activities and exhibits for the whole family! Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult or bring a signed permission form. Wear closed-toed shoes, long sleeves and clothes that can get dirty. Registration is required to participate.
