WHEATON, Md. – Montgomery Parks in partnership with Casey Trees and Bartlett Tree Experts are offering a new one-week Tree Climbing Academy, designed to introduce adult participants to professional tree climbing techniques used in forestry and tree care. The academy will be held at Wheaton Regional Park from November 4 through 8, 2024. It is open to newcomers interested in exploring these fields and people already working in the tree care industry looking to enhance their skills. An estimated 20 applicants will be accepted.

During the five-day Tree Climbing Academy, expert instructors will guide participants through various aspects of tree climbing, including safe working concepts, ropes, knots, climbing saddles and equipment, and industry best practices. Candidates will learn to set ropes in trees, ascend vertically, and navigate the canopy of small and large trees. Upon completion, participants will receive a Tree Climbing Academy certificate and a $500 stipend provided by Casey Trees.
Tree Climbing Academy Applicants should be:
- At least 18 years old
- Able to attend the entire week of the academy
- Interested in starting or advancing a career in the tree care industry
- Preferred candidates should be in good physical condition, able to hoist themselves vertically into a tree, demonstrate a positive attitude, and enjoy physical work.
