Project Description

This project renovates the South Germantown Adventure Playground located at 17920 Germantown Park Dr. Germantown, MD 20874. The proposed program seeks to provide multi-purpose high performance play activities and nature play for children of all ages and ability levels, opportunities for intergenerational play and prospects for learning and social interaction. The project intends to adopt the current framework which provides loop access to individual play areas to maximize efficiency and adaptability. Besides play components, the project elements will include accessible walkways, multi-purpose terraces, open space, picnic area, game/workout area, site furnishings, tree shade, signage, related stormwater management, and landscape improvements.

Background

The Adventure Playground is part of South Germantown Recreational Park in Boyds, Maryland. The 695-acre park offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities serving the residents in northern Montgomery County. The 7-acre playground on the west side of Germantown Park Drive is one of the many attractions in the park. It has been a popular destination for families, school groups and camp programs for the surrounding residents and throughout the DC metropolitan area. The playground was completed in 2003 and consists of five themed play areas. It was the County’s largest and most unique playground with areas intended to challenge youngster’s minds as much as provide fun activities. Although it has served the community well over the years, the playground is deteriorating, outdated, and facilities need an overall renovation. Existing facilities include themed play structures, climbing wall, concrete sculpture, swings, slides, musical play, maze, picnic areas, paved play spaces, walkways, and mature trees. There is a parking lot and restroom nearby to support the playground uses. This project is in an environmentally sensitive watershed.

Status/Project Update

The project has completed the detailed design phase and has successfully obtained the required regulatory permits. The construction documents are expected to be issued for bidding in January 2025. Work is anticipated to begin in March or April 2025.
