WHEATON, Md. – Montgomery Parks is celebrating the tenth annual Latino Conservation Week July 15-23, 2023, with events and programs to support the Latino community in getting outdoors and participating in activities to protect our natural resources.  

Latino Conservation Week was started by the Hispanic Access Foundation to connect Latino communities with access to outdoor recreation and conservation education. More than 200 events are planned nationwide to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.  

Montgomery Parks has several free events planned for adults and children. All events will be conducted in Spanish and English. 

Saturday, July 15, 2023 
 
Climate Stories Screening and Cleanup | 10:00 a.m.-Noon | Glenmont Local Park 
Participants will watch the Climate Stories video created by Latinos in Montgomery County. That will be followed by a clean-up of the park and surrounding neighborhood. Free. The event is full. Email a request to be placed on the waitlist: valeria.espinoza@montgomeryparks.org
 
Turtle Talk  | 10:30-11:15 a.m. | Brookside Nature Center 
Come visit our box turtle enclosure and learn about the natural history and conservation challenges of these iconic reptiles.  You will also see the turtles explore the great outdoors in their enrichment enclosure.  Free. Registration required.  Register here.

Kids Tree Climbing | 10:00 a.m.-Noon | Long Branch-Arliss Neighborhood Park 
Montgomery Parks’ arborists provide safety gear and support as kids learn rope-assisted tree climbing and experience trees from a new perspective. Free. No registration required. 
 
Tuesday, July 18, 2023 

Bilingual Weed Warrior Event | 4-5:30 pm. | Cabin John Regional Park 
Learn to identify and remove non-native invasive plant species. Ages 16+. Student service-learning hours available. Register here.  

Wednesday, July 19, 2023 

Nature Exploration | 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. | Crossroads Farmers’ Market  
Enjoy nature-based activities and games to encourage ecological thinking, exploration and play. Free. No registration required.  

Thursday, July 20, 2023 

Kayak Cleanup | 4:00-6:00 p.m. | Lake Needwood 
Kayakers of all levels are welcome to paddle Lake Needwood and clean up debris.  Participants must be at least 12 years old. Paddlers ages 12-15 must be accompanied by an adult in a tandem or nearby kayak. Free. Event is full. Email request to be placed on waitlist: valeria.espinoza@montgomeryparks.org.  

Friday and Saturday, July 21 & 22, 2023 

Nature Walk |10:30-11:30 | Brookside Gardens 
Tour aquatic gardens to learn about the diversity of wildlife and plants. The tour will be conducted entirely in Spanish. Free. Registration required. Register here.
