WHEATON, Md. — Research has shown that being in nature is beneficial to our physical and mental well-being and there is no better combination than exercising in a beautiful, serene park.

Join Montgomery Parks for our Parks Academy Series fitness classes, POUND Fitness and Nordic Walking, that are sure to clear your mind, tone you up and get your heart pumping! Both POUND Fitness and Nordic Walking offer a free introductory class that is followed by weekly classes. Separate registration is required for the introductory and weekly classes.

“We are excited for our new Parks Academy series. Not only does it offer wellness and learning opportunities but also lets people enjoy the outdoors while getting fit,” said Annie Levis, special events coordinator.

The Parks Academy fitness series will run each season offering new classes.

Introduction to POUND Fitness
 | April 27 | 10–10:45 a.m.
POUND Fitness | May 1–June 26 (Wednesdays, no class June 19) | 5–5:45 p.m.
Norbeck-Muncaster Mill Neighborhood Park, 4101 Muncaster Mill Road, Norbeck

Unleash your inner rockstar at the free introductory class to POUND on Saturday, April 27 and in the weekly classes starting Wednesday, May 1. POUND is a drumming-inspired cardio workout that uses Ripstix (lightly weighted drumsticks) to tone your body. Infused with Pilates-based movements, strength training and plyometrics, you’ll leave class feeling alive, confident, and strong! It’s a perfect way to de-stress after your workday. Let’s jam to the beat of good music, move your body, and have fun! Please bring a yoga mat. Ripstix’s will be provided by the instructor for in-class use. Ages 18 and older. Introductory class-free; 8 weekly classes-$64 per personRegistration is required; no walk-ins.

Introduction to Nordic Walking | May 4 | 11 a.m.–12 p.m.
Nordic Walking | May 7–28 (Tuesdays) | 6–7 p.m.
Ovid Hazen Wells Recreational Park, 12121 Skylark Drive, Clarksburg

Practice this fun and easy-to-learn outdoor exercise on Nordic walking, also known as Urban Poling or pole walking with a certified instructor. Nordic walking burns up to 46 percent more calories than walking without poles and helps improve posture and balance by engaging the core and upper body. Nordic walking is for people who can walk with or without assistance. Class equipment will be provided by the instructor for in-class use. Ages 18 and older. Introductory classfree; 4 weekly classes-$40 per person. Registration is required; no walk-ins.
