This project will renovate the existing playground while providing accessibility and storm water management. Glen Hills Local Park is located at 12511 Circle Drive, Potomac, MD.
The existing playground was installed in 1992 and is primarily constructed of wood. It will be removed and a new playground will be installed in its place. Local park playgrounds are typically 3,500 to 5,000 square feet in size and include playground equipment to meet the needs of children from ages 2-12, and seating for caregivers. Typical types of equipment include swings, play structures, and smaller freestanding pieces.
Playground Design Concept
The proposed playground at Glen Hills Local Park will significantly expand the current play equipment offerings within the park. The new playground will include a set of swings (accommodating toddlers, older children, and children with physical disabilities), a new play structure for children 2 to 5 years old, a new play structure for children 5 to 12 years old, a freestanding net climber, and a freestanding spring rider.
The 5 to 12 structure is the focal point of the playground design with a variety of climbers, ladders, and slides. Users can choose from several possible routes to the top – with varying levels of difficulty – taking on a new challenge with each climb. The slides offer a safe and fun return to ground level. This larger play structure also includes a horizontal climber, rock-climbing wall, net climber, and spinner. Whimsical roof ‘sails’ on the top of each platform provide shade to the play surfaces below.
Elements from the larger structure are replicated on a smaller scale for younger park users (ages 2 to 5). Nearly every surface on this structure is designed for play, allowing several children to climb at once and creating endless opportunities for exploring. The structure includes two platforms (36” and 48” tall), three slides, and four climbers. Other play features integrate imaginative and interactive play including two hand drums, an interactive puzzle, and a crow’s nest with steering wheel. A solid roof above each platform provides shade to the play areas below.
