Montgomery Parks announces Veterans Day weekend operating hours and programs

WHEATON, Md. – Montgomery Parks, announces Veterans Day weekend operating hours.     

Veterans Day Special Event

On Saturday, November 11, military personnel (veterans and active duty) skate for free during public sessions at

• Wheaton Ice Arena (12:30–2:30 p.m.; 4:30–6:30 p.m.) and
• Cabin John Ice Rink (12–2 p.m.; 4–6 p.m.; 8:30–10 p.m.) 

Open Parkways schedule    

The Open Parkways will be extended during the Veterans Day holiday weekend. During this time, parkways are open to pedestrians and bicyclists and closed to motor vehicles.

• Beach Drive between Connecticut and Knowles Avenue (2.9 miles) 
• Friday, November 10, at 9 a.m. until Sunday, November 12, at 4 p.m.

• Sligo Creek Parkway between Old Carroll Avenue and Piney Branch Road and between Forest Glen Road and University Boulevard West
• Friday, November 10, at 9 a.m. until Sunday, November 12, at 4 p.m.

• Little Falls Parkway between Arlington Road and Dorset Avenue (0.4 miles)
• Open 24/7 for recreation and exercise

*Please note: Gate closures are intended to be completed by the times listed above. The re-opening of the parkways begins at the times listed above. However, this process may take up to thirty minutes to complete.

Additional facilities open during the holiday include: 

•  Parks, trails, gardens, playgrounds, dog parks, skate parks, outdoor exercise stations, and outdoor tennis/pickleball and basketball courts* are open daily, sunrise to sunset. (*Select outdoor courts are available for rental.)  
• The inline hockey rink at Ridge Road Recreational Park and street hockey/futsal rink at  Dewey Local Park may be permitted, or are available first come, first served, if not reserved.  
• Picnic shelters and campfire rings are available for rental at several locations.    
• Little Bennett Campground    
• South Germantown Driving Range  
• Brookside Gardens grounds open daily sunrise – sunset, the Visitor Center is open daily 9 a.m.­–4 p.m., Conservatory is open daily 10 a.m.–4 p.m.   
• Josiah Henson Museum & Park, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Sunday 12 – 4 p.m.
• Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park Museum & Visitor Center, Closed Friday. Open Saturday, 10 a.m.– 4 p.m.

 The following facilities will be CLOSED on Veterans Day (observed), Friday, November 10, 2023   

• Montgomery Parks Headquarters and Permits Offices  
• Montgomery Parks Customer Service Office 
• Brookside Gardens Visitors Center and Conservatory (Garden grounds are open till sunset).
• Woodlawn Manor Museum
