REGISTRATION CLOSED – Weed Warrior Workday at Wood Local Park

Save the trees and the native ecosystem

Join Chuck, Weed Warrior Supervisor, for a non-native, invasive plant removal workday in Wood Local Park in Rockville, MD. We will focus on non-native, invasive vines and shrubs, including porcelainberry (Ampelopsis glandulosa var. brevipedunculata), Asian bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), wintercreeper (Euonymus fortunei), English ivy (Hedera helix), Japanese barberry (Berberisthunbergii), and bush honeysuckle (mainly Lonicera maackii). Native Virginia creeper and poison ivy are also present and beneficial, so we will avoid those.

We will meet at the Wood Local Park basketball courts by the school. Instructions will be sent after you register. Street parking is available.

Please wear long pants that cover your ankles, long sleeves, and sturdy, closed-toed shoes. Bring gloves, pruners, small folding hand saws and/or loppers if you have them. Gloves and tools are available to borrow if you don’t have your own. No power tools or machetes allowed. Please bring water to drink. Please note: Court Ordered Volunteer Hours can’t be granted through this workday.

This event is capped at 15 people.

This workday is pre-approved for MCPS SSL hours. Volunteers under 16 are not permitted to use tools, so if you are under 16, please email the Weed Warrior supervisor ahead of time to see whether they will have meaningful work for you to do.  Volunteers 14 and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

*If you or anyone in your household are sick, waiting for Covid test results, and/or have tested positive for Covid (regardless of vaccination status) you are not eligible to volunteer at this time.*
