Macroinvertebrate Sampling with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Join EPA scientists for a program focused on stream restoration, stream health, and the greater connectivity between headwater streams and the Chesapeake Bay. This program includes a walk along Paint Branch Creek to perform macroinvertebrate sampling. While walking to the sampling site, we will point out several best management practices and their importance to stream health. We will talk about the history of Paint Branch (including the work done by Montgomery County to preserve areas along the river) and the importance of streams like Paint Branch to the health of the Chesapeake Bay and the greater watershed. Once at the sampling location, we will teach participants how to collect macroinvertebrates. We will bring all the necessary equipment as well as a microscope so we can get a closer look at the different bug species. Participants who want to enter the stream and help with the macroinvertebrate sampling, must wear hard, close-toed, shoes to protect their feet. No flip flops or sandals. This program is geared towards participants 10 years and older, but younger participants are welcome as well.
