Garden Renovations: A Garden Gateway
Brookside Gardens is experiencing a wonderful makeover in 2014, as we break ground on Phase I and II of our Master Plan and install a new HVAC system. Though the construction will focus on a limited section of the Gardens, the changes will be transformative.
New Entrance and Parking Lot and Access Improvements
Phase I and II of the Master Plan address the design of the 1800 Glenallan Avenue entrance and the parking area. This complex project will break ground in March 2014, and will result in a complete transformation of the entrance – distinguishing it as the primary entrance to the Gardens – and adding spaces and design features in and around the parking area. Countless improvements will result from the project. For updates and more details, visit Montgomery Parks CIP Brookside Gardens Entry and Parking Renovation and Brookside Gardens Gateway page for alternate parking locations.
Here is what you need to know to plan your visit:
- NOTICE: Current access to the Visitors Center is through the Atrium (right) side of the building. The information desk, library, gift shop and rest room side of the building is currently closed for HVAC installation. A spacious rest room trailer is located behind the visitors center to the right- at the entrance to the Gude Garden.
- The Visitors Center will be be closed to the public for HVAC installation for 6-8 weeks beginning March 17, 2014.
- The Visitors Center parking lot will be closed for major improvements from March 17- November 2014.
- The Conservatory parking lot offers 39 spaces, or use suggested alternate parking locations.
- The Gardens and Conservatories are open!
We have made the difficult decision to cancel a number of larger events in 2014, including:
Earth Day Festival
St. Patrick’s Day Scavenger Hunt
Wings of Fancy Live Butterfly and Caterpillar Exhibit
Native Plant Sale
Spring and Fall Lecture Series
Summer Twilight Concert Series
Many plant shows and sales
Pumpkin Panache Family Festival

Gude Garden Restoration Improvement Project
Renovations to the Gude Garden began in late May and will be completed in early spring. We will be stabilizing the banks, dredging the ponds, and repairing the dams to improve water quality. The turtles and fish will be temporarily relocated to another pond.
CLOSED: During renovations, the Gude Garden lawn, Japanese Tea House, Reflection Terrace, the Labyrinth, and lower service road (a section of the Heart Smart Trail) around the Garden will be closed.
OPEN: Pedestrian access to Wheaton Regional Park through the Pine Lake gate will remain open during the renovations.
For more information on the Gude Garden Restoration Project, please visit ParkProjects.org or call 301-495-2535.
Thank you for your patience.
M-NCPPC Montgomery Parks presented the Brookside Gardens Greenhouse Facility Plan to the Montgomery County Planning Board on June 13, 2013. The facility plan proposes to install a new greenhouse within the propagation and maintenance area at Brookside Gardens. Plants will be grown in the greenhouse for use throughout Brookside’s display gardens and conservatory. The plan was presented to the community in a public meeting on April 24, 2013.
For additional information about the project, click on Brookside Gardens Greenhouse.
